Starting your business, what do you need to organize?

You nearly have everything in place to start your business in the Netherlands. However, your business must meet all the legal requirements to be able to start trading. You must also register your company with the Chamber of Commerce and set up your administration properly.

Register at the Chamber of Commerce

Your company is only recognized as a company if it is registered with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK). The Chamber of Commerce will then pass on your details to the tax authorities. You do not have to register your company separately with the tax authorities. If the tax authorities include you as a VAT entrepreneur in the administration, you will receive your turnover tax number and your VAT identification number (VAT ID).

Check whether you need to register with the Chamber of Commerce

Registration with the Chamber of Commerce is only necessary if you are classed as a real entrepreneur. According to KvK, you are an entrepreneur if you independently supply goods or services intending to make a profit.

Tax Administration Registration

After your registration in the Trade Register of the Chamber of Commerce, the KvK will pass on your details to the Tax Authorities. You do not have to register your company separately with the tax authorities. If the Tax Authorities include you as a VAT entrepreneur in the administration, you will receive your turnover tax number and your VAT identification number (VAT ID). The Tax Authorities also determine whether you are an entrepreneur for income tax purposes. Check the criteria or do the Entrepreneur Check of the Tax Authorities.

Make sure your company meets the requirements

You must consider rules and requirements when establishing your business. For some sectors, there are professional requirements, or you must have a permit. Make sure your business meets the required requirements and rules before starting your business.
Some requirements differ per municipality. Find your municipality and research the requirements.

Set up an administration

You must set up an administration for your company. It is also advisable to separate your business, and private money flows appropriately.

Describe the terms and conditions of your company

The general terms and conditions should make it clear which rights and obligations you and your customers have. They are not mandatory, but they are sensible. Inform your customers about your terms and conditions in advance.

Make sure your business insurance policies start on time

To limit your business risks, it is wise to take out several insurance policies. Make sure that these take effect when you register your company with the Chamber of Commerce.
